Be Well Akin Gump offers a variety of benefits to its personnel that go beyond the traditional medical, dental, and 401(k) plans. This includes benefit programs and services that focus on the social, collective, and well-being aspects of both the home and work environments. Our award-winning “Be Well” program is one such offering. Be Well is a personalized program that offers employees access to tools, resources, activities and group and 1:1 coaching that support a healthy, productive, and balanced life. This year, Be Well included information and activities focused on sustainability as the firm believes that living a more sustainable, environmentally aware life is key to individual and community well-being. For example, they can learn ways to conserve energy at home, or engage with colleagues on their sustainable practices – such as encouraging ride-shares, reducing plastic consumption, or conserving water. By engaging with the Be Well program and participating in various programs and activities, employees and spouses/domestic partners can earn ‘points’ that are redeemable for year-end incentives. The Be Well program rewards continued participation - more involvement = more points = higher incentive level earned. The Be Well program is incredibly successful and by folding in simple sustainability-focused programs, green initiatives remain top of mind and moving forward in meaningful ways.
Pro Bono Akin Gump has a robust and well-established tradition of pro bono legal work, leveraging expertise, experience and passions of all firm members to maximize access to justice, community development, and the rule of law. Each year, lawyers and staff alike contribute thousands of hours to related efforts and pro bono matters. This year, to help ensure greater engagement in pro bono causes specifically related to the environment and sustainability, the firm’s Always Green initiative team partnered with the Pro Bono Team to promote ‘green pro bono opportunities’ across the pro bono department’s various platforms and weekly newsletters. The weekly newsletters, which go out to the entire firm, now highlight these opportunities, connecting lawyers and staff with potential pro bono clients who need assistance in the environmental space. The firm also promoted green opportunities via Paladin, a platform that connects lawyers to pro bono matters based on their specific areas of interest – now including ESG, climate change, environmental policy, renewable energy, and more. This comes on the heels of the firm’s partnership with Stanford’s Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy, which also helps connect the firm with these types of climate and environmental justice efforts.
