How can we help rural women in the developing world rise out of poverty? At Barefoot College, the solution lies in solar mamas, the women setting the world alight one solar panel at a time. Barefoot College has developed an innovative program at their campus in Rajasthan, India where illiterate and semi-literate women learn how to make solar panels, install the panels in their villages, and become self-employed engineers who bring light and learning to their communities. Through a three-year global CSR partnership, Hogan Lovells is engaging our people, clients, and communities to help Barefoot triple its number of international beneficiaries by training 400 new solar mamas who will solar electrify 20,000 households and bring clean, renewable light to 200,000 people in 35 countries. We're doing this through an innovative and holistic combination of pro bono legal advice, financial support, strategic communications, and community volunteering. Since our partnership began, 1,500 people from Hogan Lovells have spent 3,000 hours on pro bono matters and community volunteering projects and US$400,000 to support 384 solar mamas who are electrifying 19,200 households in 35 countries. We’ve engaged 1,500 people from Hogan Lovells, reached 375 clients through 8 events, taught 1,085 children about solar energy, and raised US$400,000. By the end of our partnership, we will have supported 500+ mamas from 35+ countries.
